Slab leaks are some of the more mysterious water leaks that can happen in a residential property. Most homeowners have never even heard of them, and they aren’t visible to the naked eye when they begin and usually for some time after. However, serious water damage and even structural damage can occur if a slab leak is left for too long.

The Nature of Slab Leaks

Slab leaks begin underneath the concrete floor of your foundation. This piece of concrete is often called a “slab” which is where the name comes from. The leak begins under the slab and it usually goes undetected until there are signs that point to it as a culprit. If they are smaller, slab leaks may go on for some time before you become aware.

What Are Some Slab Leak Warning Signs?

Since you can’t see a slab leak when it happens, you’ll have to wait for other signs to tell you what has happened. These may include mold patches around your basement, damp or soggy earth on your property, damp or saturated walls, floors or carpet and elevated water bills. The key to remember is that moisture of any kind doesn’t belong in your basement, so if you ever see any, it makes sense to contact a plumber as soon as possible, because you really have no idea how long it’s been going on.

What Kind of Damage Can a Slab Leak Cause?

Most homeowners are afraid of mold when it comes to basement moisture, and for good reason. A moldy basement can pose a serious health risk to everyone in your household. Aside from that, serious water damage to your floors and walls, damaged electrical circuits and lighting, rotted wood and saturated earth are all possible consequences of a slab leak. The fact that it can carry on for so long means the damage can be quite serious, and that a quick call for help when you notice a sign is imperative.
